Frequently Asked Questions

When do I need a sensitivity reader?

Sensitivity readers should be considered a type of editor. You will hire them whenever you are writing about a person or experience you don’t know much about. They are there to help you represent groups of people and individuals correctly without the risk of having blind spots.

Do I have to pay? How much should it cost?

You should expect to pay your sensitivity reader. They are performing a service for you to improve your manuscript. Costs vary greatly from person to person so it is best to schedule a consult and get a quote before moving forward. Some may only need to read a scene, others a full book.

What happens if it doesn’t work out?

Unless specified that the content was created by Smut Lovers: The Community we are not to be held liable for your choice in utilizing anything from our database. Your choice to do so is completely your own. Our goal is to provide easy access to the things you need when you need it. Paid courses, consults and more are your choice and your choice alone. This also applies to the database. It is open sourced so the decision to work with someone is yours.

How many sensitivity readers do I need?

This would depend on the complexity of your story and what they are reading for. The industry recommendation is two to three for a project. Use your judgement. If you are writing a story that features a black woman who practices Voodoo in the Islands and you’ve never been there you are going to need a lot of assistance. However if you are reading about the loss of a child and you have experienced that yourself you may only need one other person to read for you.

“As lovers of smut, we’re all coming from different backgrounds and identities to appreciate the human body and its many wonderful sensations, and with the influx of humans embracing their love and desire to see more expansive sensory based experiences comes the need for more educational content and resources for all of us, new and seasoned alike, most especially for and from a fictional lens.”
